IEC 60950 and IEC 62368 safety standard terminology

This document compares the terms, definitions and parameters of the IEC 60950-1 and IEC 62368-1. Ultimately IEC 60950-1 should be replaced by the IEC 62368-1 hazard-based safety standard and so it is important to understand the relationships between the established and hazard-based terminology.

This document lists the IEC 60950-1 and IEC 62368-1 safety standard approaches in clause 1. The definitions in clause 2 are grouped by root term; Persons, Safeguard, Conditions, Access, Cable and Enclosure, Insulation, Circuit, Voltage and current, Remote, Network, Touch, and Mains. Clause 2 covers the IEC 60950-1 voltage source parameters and clause 3 the IEC 62368-1 voltage source, energy source, power source and potential ignition source parameters. Clause 4 shows how to create a harmonised definition using both IEC 60950-1 and IEC 62368-1 terminology. Appendix I covers IEC 60950-1 voltages, Appendix II covers IEC 62368-1 electrical source parameters and Appendix III is the Safety equivalence of IEC 60950-1 and IEC 62368-1.
